Visual artist Asma Mahmood proudly exhibits her latest artwork in a new show, Three Yards of Dogma 2: Denied Favours. The display re-visits the work Mahmood, who was born in Pakistan, did for her Master of Fine Art degree at York University. It is also a continuation of her research into the dynamics in South Asian and Muslim communities living in the West. Mahmood told the Mississauga News, “This show is taking a representational garment and using it both as (a) symbol of protest and a link to that dynamic history of Muslims that was built upon tolerance and mutual respect,” said Mahmood, who sits on the Mississauga Arts Council board and is a founding board member of the South Asian Visual Arts Centre in Toronto. “I use the imagery of women who have been burned by acid and violence in the name of honour and chauvinistic values. Those values that have become more important than the message of the Quran. Misinterpretation of all these elements has gradually eroded the system of community and social justice and as a result the religion is in conflict with modernity.”
