The Art Gallery of Mississauga’s Permanent Collection accommodates over four hundred artworks that encompass a diverse scope of media, styles, and subjects. Ranging from naturalistic landscapes and figures, to non-representational, expressionistic compositions, to geometric arrangements of line and colour, the AGM’s collection features a particularly impressive contingent of prints and drawings, including woodcuts, serigraphs, etchings, lithographs, pencil drawings, pastels, and monotypes.
The selection of works in Markings: Prints and Drawings from the Permanent Collection explores the varied and unique methods of drawing, printmaking, and mark-making which have found a home at the AGM. With no thematic constraints in terms of subject, the exhibition is an investigation into how the formal visual languages of line, plane, shape, texture, colour, and composition can combine in innumerable ways to create meaning.
Some of the artists featured in Markings include: Cathy Daley, whose pastel on vellum Body Work series features a cycle of silhouetted, ambiguous human forms in various states of repose; Leszek Wyczolkowski, whose etchings are an exploration of printed texture and address an interest in the contrast between organic and geometric shapes; and Tom Dean, whose prints are concerned with a dialogue between the physical and the non-physical worlds.
